Book Summary:    In a memoir that has been called "heartbreaking and heart-healing," Eleanor Vincent shares an inspiring true story of courage, creativity, faith, and sheer tenacity as she seeks to find balance after unthinkable tragedy.

Previously available only in hardcover, Swimming with Maya demonstrates the remarkable process of healing after the traumatic death of a loved one. Eleanor Vincent raised her two daughters, Maya and Meghan, virtually as a single-parent. Maya, the eldest, was a high-spirited and gifted young woman. As a toddler, Maya was an angelic tow-head, full of life and curiosity. As a teenager, Maya was energetic and independent - and often butted heads with her mother. But Eleanor and Maya were always close and connected, like best friends or sisters, but always also mother and daughter.

Then at age 19, Maya mounts a horse bareback as a dare and, in a crushing cantilever fall, is left in a coma from which she will never recover. Eleanor's life is turned upside down as she struggles to make the painful decision about Maya's fate.

Ultimately Eleanor chooses to donate Maya's organs. Years later, in one of the most poignant moments you will ever read about, Eleanor has the opportunity to hear her daughter's heart beat in the chest of the heart recipient. Along the way, Eleanor re-examines her relationship with her daughter, as well as the experiences that shaped Eleanor as a woman and as a mother to Maya.

An inspirational/motivational true story recommended for anyone who has experienced tragedy, who is grappling with traumatic experiences of the past, or who wants to better understand the strength and healing power of the human spirit.

About the Book:

Not Even The SKY Is The LIMIT, is a book showcasing the abilities of children and adults with Down Syndrome. The book is the result of the author’s own beautiful journey to find out what life with her daughter would be like. Turn the pages and you’ll see that people with Down Syndrome are able to enjoy doing everything everyone else does. In fact, as you see here, not even the sky is the limit!

Not Even The SKY Is The LIMIT, is inspired by the authors daughter Gianna, who has Down Syndrome. The book is also meant for adults, who will clearly see by turning the pages that there are no limits to what those living with disabilities can do.

A portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to organizations that improve the lives of people who live with Down Syndrome.

Our Thoughts: This is a beautiful book to show how every person is special no matter what.

Mmmmm. Tasty Review for Pork Chops!

Title: Pork Chops and Applesauce: A Collection of Recipes and Reflections
Author: Cynthia Briggs
Website: http://www.cynthiabriggsbooks.com/
Genre: Cookbook/Essays
ISBN: 1403381658

Reviewed by Elizabeth Tropp originally for Amazon

We all have favorite foods with a story connected to them. Maybe an old family recipe that has been passed down through the generations. Usually the stories are oral history but in Pork Chops and Applesauce author Cynthia Briggs decided to design a cookbook that connected the recipes to their "story". Most of the stories are fun, family memories connected to the stories although a few feel like a stretch...more of an advertisement for a local business in Briggs' New Mexico hometown.

As far as the recipe side of this dual cookbook/essays book they are, for the most part good, down home cooking. Nothing too gourmet, nothing too difficult. Just dishes that everyone in the family (even the infamous picky eater) will like. There's a wide variety of dishes: salads, appetizers, entrees, desserts, beverages. Truly a soups to nuts type of cookbook.

This book seems like a great choice as a gift, either for someone who likes cooking (or needs to learn how to cook) or for someone who enjoys family essays.

Veteran Goodbye Woman Gives Other Parents College Advice

Book Title: The Goodbye Year
Author: Toni Piccinini (Seal Press Pub. October 2013)
Genre: Health & Well Being
WOW! Blog Tour Dates: 10/7/2013-11/7/2013
Book Hashtag: #TGYPiccinini
 Paperback: 264 pages
Publisher: Seal Press (September 10, 2013)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1580054862
ISBN-13: 978-1580054867

Book Summary:   For many mothers, a child’s senior year brings about a serious look back on the past eighteen. Every event—from Halloween to Mother’s Day—becomes The Last Time.

Toni Piccinini knows exactly what that’s like, and in The Goodbye Year, she offers the loving support every soon-to-be Empty Nester needs. Think of Toni as your bossy-but-loving Italian auntie, with modern sensibilities and a packed pantry. With the wisdom she’s acquired from saying goodbye three times to her own children, she reassuringly holds your hand while encouraging you through the insanity of the college application process, the rejections and the acceptances, and the teary dorm drop-offs. Even better, she reminds every mother that the best is yet to come—freedom, creativity, flexibility, and the Me Years.

Author Bio:

My writing career started when I stapled my first "book" together and launched it at a reading attended by my brother, Scotty, and our Boxer, Lonesome. The title-less story was a mash-up of Hansel and Gretel, The Six Swans, and a Box Car Children adventure, with the protagonists (sister, brother, and dog) risking everything in their quest for a magical lump of coal that would save the town. It was an immediate success. During the fifty years between my first and second book, "The Goodbye Year: Wisdom and Culinary Therapy to Survive Your Child's Senior Year of High School (and Reclaim the YOU of You)" I have--in no order of importance or chronology--opened a "Top 100" San Francisco restaurant, published scientific articles on the efficacies of antibiotics, sang the National Anthem at high school football games, published essays, recipes, and cookbook reviews, and sent three children off to college. I live in Marin County California, which is a long way from my Western Pennsylvania hometown, Heilwood. I am busy on my next book, which may revisit the power found in a magical lump of coal. Thank you for checking in.

    •

The Goodbye Year is a great book for parents and non-parents alike. Even though the book focuses on a child’s senior year and those specific challenges, even a parent of young children or a non-parent can relate to loving, letting go, and the last time for something special. Piccinini offers love and support as well as some fabulous recipes. She is an encouraging friend who went from dreading those “lasts” to enjoying her own new-found freedom and flexibility. The optimism, support, and humor throughout The Goodbye Year drew me in and kept me interested through and through.
We’ve all been in a situation where we knew it was the end of something special. I remember that feeling the last day of first grade. While the other children were laughing and enjoying the celebratory picnic I was thinking how we would all have different teachers next year and things would never be the same again. I was not able to express the sorrow that came with that ending but as a child I just knew I was sad. Similar feelings came over me the last day of summer camp, the last day before my best friend moved away, and the last day of school each and every year. After reading The Goodbye Year I feel better equipped to lead my children through those ‘lasts’. I have to admit before I started reading I assumed this particular book wouldn’t apply to me since my children are just starting school, but I really have a lot of take-aways and would certainly recommend The Goodbye Year to anyone who has experienced love or loss of any kind.
Piccinini considers herself a bossy-but-loving Italian and that love shines through on each page. I felt her wrapping her arms around me with love and encouragement. She empowered me to try new recipes, enjoy little moments I would otherwise have missed, and somehow though we have never met, we have shared laughter. I hope Piccinini has a new project or two lined up because I look forward to reading more from her.

If you don't have a big-budget book publisher behind you, your book, no matter what its merits, will get lost among the thousands and thousands published each year. Authors, especially first-time authors, must promote their books themselves.

This book tells them how to do it without going broke. There are many, many ways to get free publicity and the authors have listed all of them.

If you're a first time author and hope to stand any chance of success you need: a) an editor and b) a way to promote your book.

Review provided by World of Ink Network

“We are all different but our unique traits make us who we truly are. It is important for kids to realize that they don't have to compare themselves to others in order to be accepted. Sometimes, they have to accept themselves first in order to be accepted by others.” ~Irene Roth, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Committed Writers

    About the Book:

Milton is a story of a turtle. Unlike other turtles with round or oval shells, Milton has a square shell. One afternoon, and being new to the area, he decides to take a walk to the pond to relax.

Just when he thinks he finds the perfect spot, he can't stay. Not wanting to cause a problem, he goes further up the pond, only to discover, home is the best place to relax.

    EXCERPT:

“Hey, look at me. I can sit on a turtle. You are a

turtle, aren’t you?” the frog asked, with some

    hesitation.

Milton, hearing the same question before, turned

his head to see the frog sitting on his back and

simply answered, “of course I am. Will you please

    get off my shell.”

“Well,” said the frog, as he jumped off and landed

next to Milton’s head, “I’ve never seen a turtle

    with a square shell.”

Book Tour Features Proof of Psychic Abilities

Introductory Video - An Open Mind https://vimeo.com/56568624
Title – The Reality of ESP: A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities
    Author – Russell Targ
    Author's website link – http://www.espresearch.com
    Genre or category – Non-iction,
    ISBN – 978-0835608848
The Reality of ESP: A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities by Russell Targ
Nobel laureate physicist Brian Josephson says, “This book should make those who deny the existence of [psychic] phenomena think again.” In The Reality of ESP, Targ presents evidence from the $20 million research program he co-founded at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in the 1970s. The amazing feats of psychic ability he details include: While remote viewing for the CIA, SRI psychics found a downed Russian bomber in Africa, reported on the health of American hostages in Iran, and described Soviet weapons factories in Siberia. When San Francisco heiress Patricia Hearst was abducted from her home in Berkeley, a psychic with the SRI team identified the kidnapper and then accurately described and located the kidnap car. After leaving SRI, Targ's group made $120,000 by psychically forecasting for nine weeks in a row the direction and amount of changes in the silver commodity futures market – without error! Targ also describes a plan for developing your own psychic abilities.
proof is evidence "so strong it would be logically or statistically unreasonable to deny," writes physicist Russell Targ." If facts alone can convince a skeptical investigator of the reality of ESP, this book should do it." In The Reality of ESP, Targ presents evidence from the $20 million research program he co-founded at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in the 1970s, together with the Buddhist and Hindu origins of ESP. The amazing feats of psychic ability he details include:

    •        While remote viewing for the CIA and Army Intelligence, SRI psychics found a downed Russian bomber in Africa, reported on the health of American hostages in Iran, described Soviet weapons factories in Siberia, and forecasted a Chinese atomic-bomb test three days before it occurred.
    •        When San Francisco heiress Patricia Hearst was abducted from her home in Berkeley, a psychic with the SRI team was the first to identify the kidnapper and then accurately describe ad locate the kidnap car. After leaving SRI, Targ's group made $120,000 by psychically forecasting for nine weeks in a row the direction and amount of changes in the silver commodity futures market – without error!
    •        The odds against chance in many cases are staggering. Take the 36 outdoor remote-viewing trials described with six US army intelligence officers. Their overall statistical significance was at odds of three in a hundred thousand (3 x 10-5). If the officers had been baseball players, the expected six first-place matches would equal a batting average of 166. But they achieved nineteen matches – batting better than 500 – while the great Joe DiMaggio had a lifetime average of only 335! "Such numbers," says Targ, "are what we mean by statistical proof. We achieved an effect size of 0.6, which is ten times greater than that claimed by the NIH for aspirin preventing heart attacks.”
    •       Convinced that most of us have psychic abilities we haven't tapped, Targ concludes by describing how we can learn to develop our own ESP, at no cost, working at home using the SRI techniques with a friend. It involves a simple, meditative skill that eighth-century Buddhists called moving from conditioned to spacious or naked awareness. "Who would not want to try that?" he asks.

    About Russell Targ
Physicist Russell Targ was the co-founder of a 20 year $25 million research program investigating psychic abilities for the CIA, Army Intelligence and many other agencies at Stanford Research Institute (SRI). This previously SECRET research and applications program is now declassified. Targ has written a comprehensive book describing the remarkable accomplishments of this program.
What Are People Saying About The Reality of ESP
In The Reality of ESP: A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities, Russell Targ shares his comprehensive scientific research to provide convincing evidence that by quieting our minds we can access information in the field of potentiality where there is no distance in space and time.- Deepak Chopra, author, War of the Worldviews
    ~*~
I have known Russell Targ for four decades. He is clearly among the most successful, creative and brilliant researchers ever to enter the field of parapsychology. He has approached this most difficult of all fields with uncompromising rigor and a penetrating, scientific mind. This book is the inside story of research that is shaking the very foundations of conventional western thinking about the human mind and its relationship to the physical world. I highly recommend it. –Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, Dean of Transformational Psychology, University of Philosophical Research
    ~*~
Russell Targ is one the foremost scientists in the world when it comes to parapsychology – and a good story teller too. If you want to know the latest and greatest about our increasing understanding of the psychic side of humanity, this is required reading. –Charles T. Tart, Professor, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto CA, Professor Emeritus, Psychology, University of California, Davis and author of The End of Materialism.

  • Every once-in-a-while I break down and review a novel myself. Not often. I had to stop accepting reviews because I needed to time to write but now and then I see how the reading of a novel by a writer who’s known for his or her expertise will help my own writing; that time usually comes when I’m working on a final draft of a novel myself.

That time is here. I’m on deadline to submit a novel (and, surprisingly, a proposal) to my sweetie agent, Terrie Wolf. So even though I didn’t have time I said yes to Wally Lamb’s new novel (to be released this fall) called We Are Water. I want to tell you, I’ve never read a novel that I marked up so much. I’ve got notes for technique, notes for backstory (Lamb uses tons of backstory!), notes on structure, folded pages, pages with turned-down corners. It’s a fat book, and I’m exhausted.

Still, I’m glad I read it—even when I didn’t have time. And it occurs to me that we may benefit the most from picking up a great book when we are busy. Yes, my own book will be late. But Terrie understands. Deadlines are meant to help us finish our work and do our best work. If we’re delayed because something comes up that helps us do better work...well, isn’t that what we’re after? More experiences. Better writing.

Joy, Happy Reading, Writing, Editing, and Promoting in the New Year!

    Review:

"A mystery set in the village of Jane Austen's Emma," about says it all! What a fun, charming murder mystery - sounds strange to call a murder mystery charming, but it is! This story is just like reading a sequel to Austen's Emma. Ms. Grossack captured the heart of Emma and her fellow villagers in Highbury. You feel like you're reading Austen. Descriptions of the villagers, the surroundings, even the beloved characters from the original Emma are back to help solve the mystery. Even the style of the mystery seems to be from the period -- i.e. Wilkie Collins. I really enjoyed this story. It even solves one of the mysteries in Emma -- how did Mr. Churchill's first wife die?? Relax, enjoy, and be entertained.

One tough woman takes on the West

The main character in this book is Lorrie, a strong, courageous woman that goes off the Oregon Trail and blazes her own life in the West. She's the embodiment of what a woman of that time period had to be like: able to make decisions, able to pull and use a weapon, and with the people skills needed to survive and thrive. This is a pleasant read that will take you into the Old West and leave you with a good sense that the West was not won by cowboys taking on Indians, it was won little town by little town, because of women like Lorrie.

Ms. Lopez has written an entertaining, well researched addition to the body of self help and relationship mending literature. Her writing style is conversational and witty and she deals with a potentially grim subject in a fairly lighthearted and humorous manner while citing the high costs of infidelity on a personal and societal level. Anyone who has been tempted to cheat, has already given into the temptation or has been on the other side of the equation should read The (IN)Fidelity Factor for help with this potentially devastating situation. You may not agree with every point Lopez makes but her passionate treatment of the subject is well worth the read.

    About the Author

Elda has been on both sides of the (in)fidelity fence. Her experiences, and those she's witnessed one time too many, led her to write a credible account of the whys and why nots before stepping into the infidelity pit. A native Southern Californian; she was born in Glendale, reared in Lincoln Heights until the age of two, and lived in Norwalk thereafter. She left the fold of her loving home at 17, attended Rio Hondo junior college, studied at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and graduated with a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Whittier College.

Elda has led a diverse life due to her exploratory nature in and out of the box. A sampling being: She's parasailed in Puerto Vallarta, zip lined in Costa Rica, skied the Austrian Alps, and swam with stingrays in Moorea. Her love of travel will keep her crawling around this fascinating planet. She worked in the entertainment industry for many years in various capacities: dialogue coach, voice-over, casting, performances on stage, screen and radio. Her primary focus was acting (her first love). She has also taught English in Japan and has tutored Language Arts in the underserved communities within Orange and Los Angeles County. She has volunteered for a variety of causes, with an emphasis on children. Her joys are reading, dancing, music, reveling in humor and expanding her horizons externally and internally. She loves, loves, loves, flamenco! She currently lives in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.
With her recent incarnation as an author, she hopes to promote awareness of the value of healthy, honest relationships and personal accountability therein via her new book, THE (IN)FIDELITY FACTOR: Points to Ponder Before You Cheat.
